First edition with eight plates by N.C. Wyeth. This book is the first in a trilogy. It chronicles the life of Jacob Vandemark, a Dutch-American who begins as an orphaned canal hand on the Erie Canal in New York. Drawn by the promise of the American West, Jacob embarks on a journey in 1855, traveling through Wisconsin and along Iowa's Old Ridge Road to settle in the fictional Vandemark Township in Monterey County, Iowa. With eight N.C. Wyeth illustrations, including the frotispiece, plus a Wyeth designed jacket, not price clipped, with 3/4" inch chip to bottom rear, now in Brodart. Some bumping to fly leafs at rear. 420 pages.
