The Realist at War; and the Later Years of William Dean Howells 1837-1885: The Road to Realism. Two jacketed volumes of Edwin H. Cady's biography of William Dean Howells, the trailblazing editor of the Atlantic Monthly and author of the original gray-flannel-suit novel, The Rise of Silas Lapham. The Syracuse University professor inscribed each volume to the same recipients on different occasions. The jackets are each unclipped with the $4.00 and $5.00 prices intact. The jacket of Early Years volume has light soiling and can best be described as shopworn, and is now in protective Brodart cover. The Mature Years jacket has two closed tears and a patch of wear to the top rear cover; this is also in a protective cover.
